Essie J.N

Meet Essie J.N. from Budapest, a visual artist whose practice explores how images can slow down time and preserve the emotional atmosphere of everyday life. Working across figurative oil painting and analog photography, Essie approaches both mediums as interconnected forms of storytelling.

Originally trained in photography, she uses her analog camera as a kind of visual diary, capturing fleeting human moments, shifting light, and quiet gestures within urban environments. These “stolen moments” often become the foundation for her large-scale figurative oil paintings, where Mediterranean-inspired architecture, earthy palettes, and cinematic compositions transform ordinary scenes into lasting emotional narratives.

At the center of Essie’s work is an interest in memory, atmosphere, and the fragile tension between permanence and transience. She is especially drawn to the way light interacts with stone, streets, and human presence, revealing traces of lived experience that might otherwise go unnoticed.

During her residency at Bored Peach Club, Essie is developing her latest project, Anamnésis: The Memory of Stone. Created through a month-long immersion on the island of Gozo, the project explores the hidden emotional landscape of the Mediterranean through analog photography and painting.

Using her camera to collect visual notes, Essie documents quiet, intimate moments unfolding against the island’s ancient architecture. She is fascinated by the contrast between the fleeting nature of daily life and the heavy stillness of historical stone surfaces. In her work, Gozo’s light becomes a central character, illuminating the emotional residue people leave behind in the spaces they inhabit.

Through this evolving body of paintings, Essie seeks to translate these atmospheric observations into a visual language that balances the temporary nature of human existence with the enduring memory held within the landscape itself.
