Justine Ellul

Justine Ellul approaches her work with an intuitive, observational lens, capturing the world as it resonates with her personal reality. Staying true to her own perception is essential, as she seeks to document life’s overlooked beauties – the small moments that others might miss. Known for photographing modern club culture, Ellul’s work is in a constant state of transition, yet always anchored in her exploration of society and the ways of living. She remains fascinated by human behavior and the emotions that arise from the interplay of solitude, connection, and environment. Her images evoke feelings both present and past, portraying the human experience in its raw, delicate form. Based between The Netherlands and Malta, Ellul studied at the Institute for the Creative Arts in Malta from 2011 to 2018, beginning with sculpture before transitioning to photography. She is currently furthering her studies at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, The Netherlands.

Stimulus 2024

Stimulus is a journey of self-reflection, exploring how external and internal triggers shape one’s state of mind. Inspired by the modern architecture of the Netherlands and the chaotic charm of Malta, it contrasts the overstimulation often experienced by those with neurodivergence [a different, valid way of being] with the calming effect of order and uniformity. This project captures the push and pull between external stimuli and inner peace, emphasizing how structure, rhythm, and patterns serve as a pathway to calm. Stimulus invites viewers to reflect on the role of sensory experiences and the importance of slowing down to find balance in a noisy world.
