Mgħawġin is the only contemporary literary journal in Gozo, aiming to highlight emerging Gozitan voices. With very little creative writing and publishing opportunities in Gozo, Mgħawġin was founded to create a space for Gozitan writers to get published. The co-founders, Corrine Zahra and Ħaley Xuereb, are Gozitan writers who respectively live in Chicago and mainland Malta, and wanted to create writing opportunities in Gozo that weren’t available to them. Mgħawġin accepts work written in both Maltese and English, aiming to bridge the gap between the two languages and not see English as a competitor to Maltese. Mgħawġin also encourages Gozitan writers to attempt at writing in Gozitan dialect. The co-founders believe that Gozitan writers have a lot to offer to the literary scene and Mgħawġin is the place where they can shine.
