Father and Son: Port Stories

After more than a dozen iterations across Europe, Father and Son arrives in Malta.
The acclaimed portrait series by Valery Poshtarov captures the quiet tenderness between fathers and sons. Through photography, it explores what it means to inherit, to belong, and to hold space for one another across generations.
The Maltese edition, Father and Son: Port Stories, invites families from the Port Region to take part in this intergenerational project, celebrating connection and shared memory within Malta’s evolving cultural landscape as part of the Nexus Project by the Port Regional Council
About the Project
Father and Son: Port Stories brings together fathers, sons, and community members from Malta’s Port Region to explore the emotional bonds between generations.
Each portrait is a collaboration; a simple act of standing side by side, of letting the camera record a gesture of care and familiarity.
This local edition is part of the Regional Cultural Cooperation Programme, and includes a parallel children’s workshop where participants will photograph the hands of their fathers or grandfathers, reflecting the same themes of connection and legacy from a younger lens.
The final works will form a public exhibition within the Port Region, transforming familiar local spaces into places of shared memory and reflection.
About the Photographer
Valery Poshtarov (b. 1986, Bulgaria) is an internationally recognised photographer whose work focuses on social connection, emotional honesty, and the visual language of memory. His Father and Son project has travelled across Europe and received multiple international awards, including the Sony World Photography Award, LensCulture, and Cortona On The Move. His work has been featured by The Guardian, ARTE, and Euronews, and is held in major collections such as MoMA and Berlin’s Museum of Photography.

Portrait sessions will take place in Malta between 1–20 April.
Participation is free of charge, and all fathers and sons will receive their portrait.
Participants must be of legal age.
